Pink Fish
Fish in the North Sea have sunburned skin and blistering as a result of the thinning ozone layer. British researchers report that young fish are the most affected due to their lack of scales that would otherwise deflect the sun's harmful rays. Ian McFadzen, a research ecotoxicologist with England's Plymouth Marine Laboratory said the fish have no protection against the rays and that they have not needed to evolve one until man influenced the atmosphere.

Golden rice could save children's lives...
but it's locked up in a Swiss greenhouse.
Scientists in Switzerland have created a genetically engineered strain of rice that could save millions of children's lives. Unlike white rice, golden rice produces beta carotene, an important source of Vitamin A, which is crucial for resistance to disease and healthy vision. Approximately 124 million children in the world don't get enough Vitamin A. Of these, about a half a million go blind and 1-2 million die due to lack of Vitamin A.
Dr. Ingo Potrykus, the German inventor of the golden rice, is facing obstacles in his efforts to send his seeds around the world. Obstacles include patents, legal issues and opposition to export genetically modified organisms from Switzerland.

The next time you're in pain, don't pop a pill. Look at a plant instead.
Research conducted at Washington State University and published in the journal Horttechology (yes, this is the correct spelling) suggests that people in rooms with a lot of greenery can tolerate more physical pain that those in surroundings without any plants. 200 people were tested for how long they could keep their hands submerged in ice water. The findings reinforce previous studies that found that people work more efficiently when they can see houseplants, and patients recover more quickly from surgery and use fewer drugs when they are in a room with a green view.

The American Flag
Although there is no official record of the meaning of the colors of the U.S. flag, in 1782, the Congress of the Confederation chose these same colors for the Great Seal of the United States and listed their meaning as follows: white to mean purity and innocence, red for valor and hardiness, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Legend has it that George Washington interpreted the elements of the flag as follows: the stars were taken from the sky, the red from the British colors, and the white stripes signified the secession from the home country. Others say that the stripes symbolize rays of light emanating from the sun.

Peppermint Pink Ketchup?
Heinz announced that it is planning the release of a new color of ketchup at the end of August. It will be either hot pink, yellow, orange or purple - and they won't say which. This follows on the heels of successful sales of 10 million bottles of their "Blastin' Green" ketchup, released last year.
"Purple ketchup (!) may be in your future" Bloomburg News Service, Honolulu Advertiser, E4, June 20, 2001
If purple ketchup turns your stomach, perhaps you'd rather have ketchup ice cream. Whether its true or not, a web site claims that this is the only vegetable flavored ice cream Baskin Robbins ever made. After making several gallons of the stuff, they soon realized it would not sell. Click on "Did you know" at http://www.ketchup.wonderland.org/
