Super-Human Color Vision

Bird and WomanSome women can see colors that aren't visible to the normal human eye. (These colors are visible to many species of birds.)

Those who can see these colors have a fourth color-detecting "cone" in their eyes and are classified as tetrachromats.

One study suggested that 2-3% of the world's women may have the visual equipment that gives a significant increase in color differentiation. Source

Some data also suggests that the architecture of the human visual system (as well as that of many animals) is really tetrachromatic - but that this capacity is blocked. Source

The bar code is going color. That’s the latest news from Microsoft.

Microsoft is hoping to take the bar code in new directions. "We use color to store more information," said Gavin Jancke, the creator of the new bar code format, which uses either four or eight hues to pack more data into a small space than does the current black-and-white bar codes.

The color bar code is being targeted especially for use on commercial media such as movies, video games and other recordings.

It makes a lot of sense ... but it’s aesthetically insensitive to the packaging design of a product. We admit we’re not sure how large these rainbow bar codes will be, but it’s from the folks who haven’t been known for much of a focus on design issues. (For example, those ghastly PowerPoint templates)
