The Colors of Finland
Rovaniemi in the Arctic Circle and Tampere

The author of Color Matters traveled to northern Finland in search of the Aurora Borealis! Instead of this phenomenon, temperatures dropped to a record breaking minus 55 Celsius (minus 67 Fahrenheit) on January 28, 1999. The headlines reported " -55 ASTETTA pilasi unelmaloman"
It's amazing that a standard 35mm camera functioned! Fortunately it recorded the amazing colors of this beautiful country in the midst of winter.

A vertical rainbow in Tampere (southern Finland)
On the left hand side of the image, right above the trees, you can see a vertical rainbow, shooting upwards into the icy blue sky. The sun is on the right hand side. Since Finland is so far North of the equator, days are very short during the winter. The sun doesn't rise very high in the sky. But when the sky is clear, sometimes the light creates this "arc" effect.
